Diplomate of National Board (DNB)
- Details of Final Examination for Broad Specialities?
- Broad Specialities -
- Final examination will consist of two parts -
a. Theory - 4 papers
b. Practical including viva - voce
- For details of contents of papers, the candidates
should consult the syllabus of the speciality concerned.
Basic Sciences as applied to the particular speciality
would be covered in paper IV.
- Eligibility Criteria
- A. Applicants for Final Examination
- Should have completed internship and Passed Primary
Examinations of the Board and provisionally registered
with the board within one month of passing the exam and
thereafter should have completed three years of training
from an institution or hospital recognized by *MCI/*NBE/*University
as suitable for postgraduate degree training maintaining
student to teacher ratio of 1:1 i.e. one Postgraduate
teacher can take one Postgraduate candidate either from
the University or from the Board including one year of
housemanship or its equivalent training approved by
MCI/University of which at least six months shall be in
speciality. Candidates registered for 3 years MD/MS
course will now get any credit of housejob/Diploma
course that might have been completed before joining
MD/MS course.
Note : No Credit for Housejob shall be given with effect
from 1.1.2003. All candidates shall have to undergo
three years training in an Institute / Hospital
recognized by MCI/Univ./NBE before appearing for final
examination.
- Alternatively
Candidates who have
passed their MD/MS examinations in a subject are
eligible to appear directly in the final examinations of
the Board in that subject only
- Alternatively
- Candidates desirous of appearing in a subject other
than the subject of their passing MD/MS examination are
eligible to appear in the final examination provided
they have undergone training for a period of two and
half years in the subject of examination in a hospital /
institution recognized for postgraduate training by
MCI/Univ./NBE. .
- Diploma holders are eligible to appear in the final
examination in the same subject provided they have
undergone additional training, maintaining student to
teacher ratio of 1:1 for *two years, equivalent to that
of 2nd and 3rd year Resident training required for MD/MS
qualifications after passing their diploma in their
subjects in a hospital recognised by MCI/universities/N.B.E.
for postgraduate degree training .
[* Candidates registering for NBE
training wef 1st July, 2000 will undergo 2 years
training after passing the diploma equivalent to that of
2nd and 3rd year resident]
- Candidates who wish to study in Institutions abroad
must send details duly certified by the head of the
Institution on ( i ) status of the hospital recognized
by the University/Examining body or both ( ii ) the
period of training (duration) ( iii ) contents of
training ( iv ) details of training programme ( v )
performance record ( log book including operative
working handled independently or assisted), in order to
determine their eligibility to allow them to get
training there.
- The following category of candidates are also
allowed to take the examinations of the Board, provided
these are registered with the board for getting training
as per clause 7.4 of the bulletin -
a. Candidates with at least PG diploma qualification
recognized by MCI/University working as Tutor,
Demonstrator, Sr. Resident, Registrar, Speciality
Medical Officer or any other equivalent full time post
(all teaching Posts) in approved teaching institutions
for a period of two years after acquisition of their
qualifications provided they produce a certificate of
holding a teaching post from the Head of the Institution
to this effect failing which the candidate will be
declared ineligible and the fee will be forfeited.
b. Candidates with P.G. diploma qualification recognized
by MCI/ University working as Sr. Resident, Registrar or
any other full time Post in the accredited Institutions
of the Board for a period of two years after acquisition
of their qualification provided they produce a
certificate from the Head of the Institutions that they
are teaching the NBE candidates.
c. Candidates holding at least PG Diploma qualifications
recognized by MCI/University and have been working as
Research Officer/Pool Officer with clinical
responsibilities same as that of a postgraduate resident
and maintaining student to teacher ratio of 1:1 can also
apply provided they furnish a certificate for the
requisite period of training ( two years after passing
PG Diploma) duly signed by the Head of the Department
and countersigned by the Head of the Institution.
- B. Training Requirement for the following subjects :
i) For Radio therapy, Radio Diagnosis and
Anaesthesiology, the housemanship may be in Medicine or
Surgery or their respective allied sciences.
ii) Work done as District Epidemiologist for a period of
1 year shall be considered at par with the housejob
required for admission to postgraduate course in Social
and Preventive Medicine.
- C. Eligibility criteria for Health Administration
including Hospital Administration.
Should have passed Primary Examination of the Board and
thereafter:
i) Should have three years experience of work as
administrative medical officer in Hospital/ Primary
health centres/District Hospitals/ ESI Hospitals
recognised by MCI/University/NBE for training of interns
or housemanship or postgraduates in all subjects (vi to
xxvi) given in Section 1. The primary health centres
will include only those centres that are attached with
Medical colleges with necessary indoor beds.
Or
ii) 3 Years administrative experience in general
hospitals with both OPD and indoor services with minimum
bed strength of 75, providing medical, surgical,
obstetrics and gynaecological and paedtric services with
full diagnostic facilities including radiology, on
scrutiny of the work load of the hospital and assessment
of medical nursing & para medical staff.
Alternatively
A candidate possessing a postgraduate degree / diploma
in the speciality or associated speciality like social
and preventive medicine or maternal child health or
health administration including hospital administration
and having worked as Civil Surgeon/ District Health
Medical Officer/ Astt. Director of Health and Medical
services or equivalent positions in ESI Corporations,
Municipal health department or other organisations for
three years will be considered to have fulfilled the
criteria required for eligibility.
Alternatively
In case of Armed Forces Medical Services, Commanding
officers of large hospitals, Professors/ Associate
Professors of Department of Hospital Administration in
AFMC Pune, Medical officers with MHA qualifications and
Medical Officers having 5 years experiance in hospital
administration will be deemed to have fulfilled the
eligibility requirement.
[Note: 3 months exemption, out of the
total training period of three years, will be given to
candidates posessing MBA qualifications]
- D. Eligibility criteria for Maternal Child Health
Should have passed Primary Examination of the board and
thereafter completed three years of training as follows.
Three years of training towards the Maternal Child
Health in the Department of SPM recognised for MD
training in medical college maintaining student to
teacher ratio of 1:1. A certificate from the Head of the
Department of SPM, countersigned by the Head of the
Institution certifying the work done in MCH should be
attached alongwith the form.
Alternatively
Persons holding postgraduate qualification eiither in
Paediatrics or Obstetrics and Gynaecology are also
eligible to take the examinations in MCH provided they
have spent one year out of the total of 3 years training
of their postgraduate degree course in areas related to
the field of MCH including nutrition either in community
outreach service area or in collaboration with the SPM
department or should have written thesis/ dissertation
in the subject of Community Health / Nutrition.

/ Postgraduate Medical Institutions, recognised by the
NBE for training to qualify for admission to the final
examinations provided student teacher ratio 1 : 1 is
maintained]
Alternatively
After acquiring postgraduate degree in Obstetrics and
Gyneacology / Paediatrics they should put in one year
additional service field research in MCH including
Nutrition in Community Health Centres/ District Hospital
or any other Hospital / Health centres rendering MCH
services.
Alternatively
Persons holding Diploma in Paediatrics or Obstetrics and
Gynaecology (eg. DCH, DGO having two years of training)
are also eligible provided they put in two years of
additional services out of which one year should
exclusively be in the field research in MCH including
Nutrition in Community Health Centres / District
Hospitals or any other Hospital / Health Centres
rendering MCH services
- E. Eligibility criteria for Family Medicine
- Candidates appearing in Family Medicine may register
before passing the Primary Examination of the Board,
however.
- Before appearing for the Final Examination they
should have passed the primary exam of the Board in
Family Medicine and
- Should have passed Primary Examination of the Board
and thereafter completed 3 years of training which shall
include 360 hours of accredited training as follows:
a. Minimum of 50 hours in each of the four major
components Surgery, Medicine and Obstetrics and
Gyneacology, Peadiatrics and remaining period in other
disciplines. The certificate should indicate the name of
the other disciplines in which the candidate has
received training.
b. The training should have been obtained in an
institution/ general practice under a recognised
supervisor and should include
- i) Lectures: demonstration: Clinical meetings: grand
round OPD in patient practice.
- ii) Correspondence of other equivalent course, such
as refresher training/ orientation course organised by
Associations/ Institutions approved by NBE and totalling
360 hours or in a department/ Institution/ General
practice recognised by NBE / MCI.
- F. For Dermatology and Venereology
i) Should have passed the Primary Examinations of the
Board and thereafter completed three years of training
from an institution or hospital in the department of
Dermatology and Venereology, recognized by MCI / NBE /
University as postgraduate degree training maintaining
student to teacher ratio of 1 : 1.
Alternatively
Diploma holders in Dermatology and Venereology are
eligible to appear in the final examination, provided
they have undergone additional training for two years in
Dermatology and Venereology equivalent to 2nd year and
third year Resident training required for MD / MS
qualification after passing their Diploma in a hospital
recognized by MCI / University / NBE for postgraduate
degree training.
ii) Candidates who have passed their MD / MS examination
in the subject of Dermatology and Venereology are
eligible to appear directly in the Final Examinations of
the Board.
iii) Candidates who have passed their MD / Diploma in
the subject of Venereology only, will be eligible for
the final examination, provided they complete two years
of additional training in Dermatology in the department
of Dermatology and Venereology, or in the department of
Dermatology of a recognized Institution.
iv) Candidates who have passed their MD / Diploma in
Dermatology will be eligible for the Final Examination,
provided they complete two years of additional training
in Venereology in the Department of Dermatology and
Venereology or in the Department of Venereology of a
recognized institution.
[Note: i) Student to teacher ratio 1 : 1
is required is required to be maintained during
candidate's training for appearing in the Board's
examination]
