> Explanation
- The media to which a substance is added to
prevent the growth of one bacteria, at the same time,
facilitating the growth of another bacteria, is called?
A. Selective media
B. Differential media
C. Enrichment media
D. Enriched media
Ans: C) Enrichment media
[By - Dr. Priyadarshi Hatekar, thanks...!!!]
[Ref: Panikar]
Explanation -
Selective media - Contains in addition to
basal medium, substances (such as bile salts, or
deoxycholate citrate) which inhibits the growth of all
bacteria except the particular wanted bacteria (which we
want to isolate)
E.g. - Mac Conkey's agar, Blood Tellurite Agar, L-J medium,
etc
Differential media - Contains substances which
help us to differentiate
between different bacteria
E.g. - Mac Conkey's agar
Contains lactose - Lactose fermenters form pink colonies;
lactose non-fermenters form colourless / pale colonies
Enrichment media - A
liquid media, that favours the growth of a
particular bacteria as it contains some substances which
either selectively favours its growth or inhibits other
bacteria
E.g. - Selenite broth, Tetrathionate broth, Alkaline peptone
water, Robertsons's cooked meat medium
Enriched media - Is Enriched with some special
nutrients like blood / serum / egg, (in addition to a basal
media)
E.g. - Loeffler's serum slope, Blood agar, Chocholate agar,
Dorset's egg medium
[Does not inhibit other bacteria]
