The phenomenon was first recognized by American dentist, Edward C. Stafne,in 1942, hence the eponym.

However, this cyst has been referred to by many other names, including Static bone cavity,Lingual mandibular bone cavity, Static bone cyst, Latent bone cyst, and Stafne bone defect.

* It is not a cyst - as it does not contain any fluid, but representing a cortical defect near the angle of the mandible below the inferior alveolar canal.

* It is usually an incidental finding, and represents a depression in the medial aspect of the mandible filled by part of the submandibular gland or adjacent fat.

* They are thought to result from remodeling of the bone by adjacent salivary tissue, and have been noted to regress following resection of the gland near by.

* They are most frequently seen in middle aged men.

* Its main claim to fame, is that it should not be confused with other lytic lesions of the jaw.

* Radiographically, the lesion usually appears as an ovoid radiolucency located between the inferior alveolar canal and the inferior border of the mandible in the region of the second or third molars.

* It can be differentiated from the traumatic or hemorrhagic bone cyst, which by location almost invariably lies superior to the inferior alveolar canal.

* Normally do not require any treatment.
