Can anyone tell what is the criteria to say whether the abdomen is distended / retracted (objective criteria) ?

The Measuerment of the abdominal girth at the level of Umbilicus is the Obective criteria for disttention of abdomen .It should be measured every hourly to assess teh distention or retraction

That is true but what to do when you see the patient for a single time (in exam, clinical viva)?

You look into the Umbilicus If it is Laughing then distended if tucked in then retracted
